WhereToEatNow Review
Lisbon spent a long time not really doing breakfast — a bica and a pastry standing at a counter was the whole of it, and honestly there are worse traditions. Dear Breakfast is the room that made the case for the other kind, and it did it well enough that half the city followed.
The space is calm and well-designed, tiles and plants and good light, and the cooking is more careful than brunch usually is. Eggs are the thing to order — properly cooked, not rushed, on bread that has been given some thought. There is usually something with avocado and something with eggs benedict lineage, both executed better than the format demands. Pastries are made on site and the coffee is taken seriously, which in a brunch place is not a given.
Go on a weekday if you can. Weekend mornings bring a wait, and the pleasure of the room is the calm, which does not survive a queue at the door. The counter seats are good for solo eating.
Honest notes: it is brunch prices, which in Lisbon terms means you are paying restaurant money for eggs — fine if that is what you came for, irritating if you expected Portuguese café pricing. Portions are moderate. And it is not remotely Portuguese in character, so if you are in town for three days it may not be the best use of one of your mornings. For a resident, or a longer stay, it earns its place.
