WhereToEatNow Review

December 2025

Zé dos Cornos ticks every single tasca box and then adds a few of its own. There are azulejo tiles climbing the walls, paper tablecloths you'll doodle on while you wait, the evening news muttering from a TV in the corner, and an owner whose way of showing affection is teasing his regulars without mercy. Tucked down Beco dos Surradores in Mouraria, this is the real, unvarnished Lisbon that no tourist brochure quite manages to bottle.

There's almost always a line, but nobody minds much — the staff will cheerfully hand you a beer to sip on the street while you wait for a spot to open up. Once you're seated, the move is obvious and non-negotiable: order the ribs, known here as the piano. They come garlicky, salty, and blistered straight off the charcoal, with none of that sweet barbecue-sauce nonsense that ruins ribs elsewhere. This is pure Portuguese grilling, and it is the best in the city.

Share a rack for around €12, add a simple tomato salad and a plate of bean rice, and you've got a full, satisfying dinner for two. Wash it down with cold Super Bock, because that's what everyone around you is drinking and they know what they're doing. The whole meal will cost you less than a single cocktail in the fancier corners of town.

Don't come here for ambiance in the polished sense — come for the atmosphere of a proper working tasca that has fed the neighborhood for generations. Show up early, before the lunch or dinner rush swallows the room, order the piano, and settle into the noise. This is cheap, honest, brilliant eating, and it may be the best €12 you spend in Lisbon.

The Verdict: Show up early or prepare to wait. Order the piano, drink Super Bock, and that's it.
