WhereToEatNow Review

March 2026

Every chef with a starred flagship eventually opens the accessible version, and most of them are disappointing. Cantinho do Avillez is not. It takes the ideas that made Belcanto famous — Portuguese ingredients pushed somewhere unexpected, technically sharp, never joyless — and delivers them in a relaxed Chiado bistro at a price a normal person can justify on a normal evening.

The menu has been stable for years because it works. The exploding olives, if they are on, are the Avillez signature and worth ordering for the trick alone. Beyond that: excellent bread and butter, a strong ceviche, well-handled fish, and a slow-cooked meat dish that changes but is reliably the most comforting thing on the table. Desserts are a genuine strength — the kitchen's pastry section is better than a bistro needs.

It is the restaurant to book when you have people to feed, mixed tastes to satisfy and no appetite for a three-hour tasting menu. It handles a group well, the service is quick and friendly, and nobody leaves unhappy.

Honest notes: it is popular and busy, and the room is tight enough that you will hear your neighbours' conversation in full. Because it is reliable rather than surprising, regular visitors find it settled into a groove. And it is firmly a tourist-and-local mix in the heart of Chiado, so do not expect a hidden-gem atmosphere. As a safe, genuinely good dinner in the centre of town, it is close to unbeatable.

The Verdict: The reliable Chiado dinner. Order the olives, the ceviche and whatever is slow-cooked that month.
