WhereToEatNow Review
Nicolau is extremely photogenic and has the social-media footprint to prove it, which usually predicts food that exists to be looked at. In this case it does not. The bowls, pancakes and eggs are actually well made, the fruit is fresh rather than decorative, and the kitchen clearly cares whether you enjoy what arrives.
The menu runs the international brunch canon — açaí and granola bowls, avocado toast, eggs several ways, a stack of pancakes that is genuinely good rather than a prop. Portions are generous. The coffee is a step above what the surrounding Baixa cafés serve, and the fresh juices are properly fresh. There is a decent spread of vegetarian and vegan options, which in this part of town is useful.
The location is the practical argument. It is one street back from Rua Augusta, so you are a minute from the main drag but out of the worst of the crush, which makes it a good reset in the middle of a day of sightseeing.
Honest notes: it is popular, small and does not take bookings, so weekend mornings mean waiting on the pavement. Prices are international-brunch prices in a city where breakfast traditionally costs two euros. And it is about as Portuguese as a smoothie bowl, so if this is a short trip, spend your mornings in a pastelaria instead. On a longer stay, or when you simply want vegetables at breakfast, it does the job well.
