Duck down the Calçada do Sacramento, a couple of minutes from the Carmo, and you'll find one of Chiado's most atmospheric secrets hiding in plain sight. Sacramento do Chiado is built into the stone vaults of a former convent, and the deeper you go, the better it gets — the candlelit cellar downstairs, all bare arches and flickering light, is about as romantic as central Lisbon dining gets. Up top there's a lively bar; below, a proper date.
The kitchen turns out contemporary Portuguese cooking that's more ambitious than the setting alone would demand. Expect well-handled fish and cataplana-style dishes, a good steak, a few creative plates, and a bacalhau option that keeps the traditionalists happy. The cocktail list is taken seriously, which makes it just as easy to come for drinks and a couple of small plates as for a full dinner. Reckon on roughly €30–40 a head for three courses, more with cocktails and wine — reasonable for the ambience you're buying.
Why come here from Carmo? Because it's close, it's beautiful, and it flips effortlessly from casual to romantic depending on which floor you land on. Come early for a cocktail at the buzzy bar upstairs, then move down into the vaults as the candles take over and the evening slows right down. It's a genuinely memorable room, and the food holds up its end of the bargain.
Honest notes: the cellar is dim and cosy but can feel warm when full, and the cooking is very good rather than groundbreaking — you're partly paying for the setting, and that's fair. Book the downstairs tables in advance if romance is the plan; the atmosphere is the whole point.
