The Time Out Market occupies half of the old Mercado da Ribeira, and the other half is still a working produce market, which is worth remembering when people call the whole thing a tourist trap. It is a food hall: thirty-odd counters around a vast shared seating area, many of them run by chefs with serious restaurants elsewhere in the city, all serving smaller and cheaper versions of what they do at home.
The format solves a real problem. If you are four people who cannot agree, or you want to eat a Michelin-starred chef's cooking without the Michelin-starred commitment, this is the answer. Manteigaria has a counter here, which alone justifies a visit. The steak, seafood and petiscos counters are consistently strong. Prices are higher than a neighbourhood tasca and much lower than the parent restaurants.
The strategy matters. Send one person to hold a table before anyone queues, go at off-peak hours — before 12:30 or after 21:00 — and split up so you can order from several counters at once. Walk the whole hall before deciding; the queues are not a reliable guide to quality.
Honest notes: at peak it is genuinely unpleasant, loud, hot and short of seats, and food eaten twenty minutes after ordering while standing up is nobody's best meal. It is not where you will experience Lisbon; it is where you will experience a well-run food hall. Locals do use it, but not at eight on a Saturday. Go early, go with a plan, and it is a genuinely good time.
