Restaurants blessed with a view this spectacular usually stop trying the moment the food leaves the kitchen — why bother, when the Tagus is doing all the work? Faz Figura, perched on its Alfama terrace, is the happy exception. It actually tries, and the results are genuinely enjoyable rather than merely adequate. That alone puts it ahead of most scenic dining rooms in the city.

The menu is Mediterranean in the broad, generous sense: fresh seafood, properly grilled meats, and a handful of pasta dishes, all handled with real competence and the occasional flash of flair. Nothing here is trying to reinvent gastronomy, and it doesn't need to. This is confident, satisfying cooking pitched perfectly to the setting — the sort of food you're delighted to linger over rather than something that demands your intellectual attention.

But let's be honest about why you're really here: the terrace. The Tagus river spreads out below you, the great red span of the 25 de Abril bridge shimmers in the distance, and Alfama's rooftops tumble down toward the water. On a warm evening, with a chilled bottle of Alentejo white sweating on the table and the light going gold over the river, it becomes very hard to imagine anywhere in Lisbon you'd rather be sitting. It is, quite simply, one of the best restaurant terraces in the entire city.

The move is obvious. Book the terrace, and book it for sunset — this is not a place to be seated indoors or after dark if you can help it. Time your reservation so the sky is still turning colors as your first course lands, order the grilled fish, and let the evening drift. Come for the view, absolutely, but stay for a meal that earns its place at one of Lisbon's finest tables.
