WhereToEatNow Review

December 2025

O Velho Eurico is the platonic ideal of a Lisbon tasca, right down to the smallest detail. The menu is handwritten. The plates don't match. The portions are genuinely enormous. The prices are, frankly, absurdly low. And the food tastes exactly like it was made by someone who loves you — because in this tiny Alfama room, tucked into Largo São Cristóvão, there's a decent chance somebody's grandmother is the one at the stove.

The daily specials rotate through the entire Portuguese comfort-food canon with zero pretension and maximum flavor. Bacalhau à brás, all salt cod, egg, and shoestring potatoes tangled together. Carne de porco à alentejana, pork and clams in that improbable, delicious surf-and-turf tradition. A deep, soulful feijoada when the day calls for it. Whatever appears on the handwritten sheet, it lands on the table steaming and generous, the kind of home cooking that restaurants with three times the price can't fake.

Don't come here expecting ambiance in the design-magazine sense. There isn't any, and that's precisely the point. What you get instead is the unhurried, unglamorous warmth of a place that cooks the way Portuguese families actually eat behind closed doors. It's loud, it's cramped, it's completely without airs, and it will make you understand why the Portuguese would rather eat like this than anywhere fancier.

A few practical notes: it's cash only, so stop at an ATM before you go, and the daily special is always the smart order — that's where the kitchen is putting its heart. Come hungry, come with a little patience, and leave having had the most authentic eating experience in Alfama. This is what Lisbon tastes like when nobody is performing for the tourists.

The Verdict: The most authentic eating experience in Alfama. Cash only — go for the daily special and come hungry.
